Skin Cancer Awareness Month is a reminder that protecting your skin is an essential part of your overall health. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, and 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer by age 70. The good news is that when detected early, it is highly treatable.
At Dermatologists of Birmingham, our team of board-certified dermatologists is dedicated to the prevention, detection, and treatment of skin cancer. Our physicians evaluate, diagnose, and treat skin cancer every day — including advanced care with a double board-certified dermatologist and Mohs surgeon on our team.
Types of Skin Cancer
Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC): The most common type, often appearing as a pearly or flesh-colored bump
Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC): May present as a scaly patch or a sore that does not heal
Melanoma: The most serious form, with the potential to spread quickly if not detected early
Who Is at Risk?
Skin cancer can affect anyone, regardless of age or skin tone. Risk increases with:
- Sun exposure and history of sunburns
- Fair skin (though all skin tones are at risk)
- Family or personal history of skin cancer
- Use of tanning beds
Prevention Starts with Daily Protection
- Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen every day
- Reapply every 2 hours when outdoors
- Wear protective clothing, hats, and sunglasses
- Seek shade during peak hours (10 AM–4 PM)
- Avoid tanning beds
The Importance of Skin Checks
Early detection saves lives.
- Perform monthly self-skin exams
- Schedule annual full-body skin exams
Our physicians are trained to identify, diagnose, and treat suspicious lesions using advanced techniques and evidence-based care.
